Rich_Words = Try

Welcome!
Each of these blog posts is about one word and how we use it and how we might pay attention to it.
Think about… love and life and leadership – where could this word be useful to you?
So, again…welcome! If there are words you want me to write about please use the contact box on this website.
Enjoy!
Let’s get started…
Hello and I thought I’d try to write a blog post and then I thought, no, I would write a blog!
Can you see the difference? Well, if not …the difference is that you’re reading this, rather than staring at a blank space.
Then I was going to try and write a long blog and then I thought, no, I would try and write a little one. So much trying and so little actual output!
I like words. As a business coach and a visiting lecturer and a psychotherapist …and a radio host too… I’m aware that words are my stock in trade. We use words without paying much attention to them and then blame the other person for not listening properly, when they disagree with us and get into a huff.
Words are interesting, annoying and free to use …one of the few things in life that does not require a subscription and a login to enjoy. If we go to France it’s good to know how to order un café au lait, for example. Personally I dont drink café, but hey, it’s a free world!
Aha, I think I’m trying to get to the point. I will stop trying and I will get to the point.
Consider the word TRY.
And not in a rugby playing sense.
In an avoiding work sense.
When we use the word try we are leaving the door open to…
  • Not starting the work.
  • Not completing the work
  • Not acting with precision.
  • Not accepting our responsibilities.
If we agree to try and write a blog then it means we are not actually agreeing to write a blog …only to think about it a bit and maybe scribble a couple of words. It looks like we are being productive, when the reality is we are just blowing smoke and hot air into the world.
Try is a weasel word. Slippery and misleading.
The next time you hear ‘try’ please challenge the other person, in a polite way. If they’re not going to do the work then you may as well have the conversation now and come up with a new plan, rather than wasting time and ending up with disappointment.
Are they going to try and do the work, or just do the work?
What do you need to pay attention to?
Will do trying, or will you do doing?
Have fun!
Rich
